Abstract:This study deals with the timing and consequences of competitive responses. It is predicted by theory that there is a negative linear relationship (here as: r-ship.) btw. response delay (as: r-d.) and responder performance (as: r-perf.) mirrored by an opposing positive linear r-ship. btw. r-d. and first mover performance (as: f-m-perf). On the contrary, this study suggests that r-d. has a curvilinear r-ship. with r-perf., and a linear r-ship. with f-m-perf. The propositions are tested using U.S. retail industry data.
