Abstract:While Latin America has traditionally constituted a critical locus for research on the mass media, little is known about the historical development of telegraphy and telephony in the region. Neither of the antithetical schools of "communication and development" research - modernization and dependency theories - has systematically examined the foundations of telecommunications systems in Latin America. The author proposes to explore the origins of telegraphy and telephony in the region to reexamine the problem of the underdevelopment of telecommunication systems.
