Abstract:Telecommunications liberalization in Asia has sprung from a trickle to a gush in the past 12 months, surprising even the most bullish of free-marketeers. The trend to open markets was certainly there already: it started 10 years ago with the diversture of American Telephone & Telegraph into the regional "baby Bells" and the privatization of British Telecom in Britain. But suddenly Asia has caught the bug. What is driving the accelerating pace? Who stands to gain? What lies ahead? Right now telecoms is a rarity.
