Abstract:Virtual teams present a new challenge to the concept and practice of leadership. Virtual team interaction occurs across the boundaries of geography, time, culture, organizational affiliation, and a whole host of other factors. The article answers the questions how such teams incorporate and redefine the traditional roles of leaders; how well team members can express roles across distance and time and what the role of facilitators in virtual teams is. These are all important questions for an increasingly virtual age. The article defines the concept of virtual teams, briefly reviews what we know about virtual teams and leadership, and then focuses on key issues related to leadership in virtual teams. The article concludes with recommendations for best practices for leadership in this challenging new environment.
