Abstract:Triggered by the Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage initiation and the concern about the raising prices for the drugs used by the elderly, this article studies the ethics of revenue-maximizing price strategies in the pharmaceutical industry. Through the perspectives of elderly customers, the pharmaceutical industry and the total U.S. population (as tax payers that finance the program), the relationship between the price strategy and access to drugs, as well as the role of profit in capitalism-based health care system are investigated. It is believed that the pharmaceutical firms will adopt a maximizing price strategy for the drugs covered by Medicare Part D program.
