Abstract:In a growing number of major industries, famous manufacturers are making less of what they sell. Just what is an industrial company, anyway? Conventional wisdom holds that real industrial companies, the bedrock of american commerce, manufacture their own products. But the C. W. is wrong again: Many top so-called industrials manufacture a shrinking proportion of what they sell under their brand names. A few manufacture nothing at all.
