Abstract:This article presents a test of the educational signaling hypothesis. Employers will rely more on education if they use education as a signal in the hiring process and otherwise less is known about applicants. The results show that employers are more likely to lower educational standards when an informal, more informative recruitment channel is used. That is why this article rejects the hypothesis that education is not used as a signal in the hiring process.
