Abstract:A Human Resources Information System (HRIS) can be used more effectively by creating a report file that includes several frequently used data elements necessary for generating reports. There are some assumptions that must be made if this approach is to be taken: 1. real-time data retrieval is not critical to the business performance; 2. a small subset of data elements satisfy a large number of the reporting requirements. An example is presented to show how the creation of a report file can enhance retrieval efficiency by maximizing the use of keys. It is demonstrated that processing efficiency correlates to the number of reports. Besides performance, another less apparent benefit of moving to a report file structure is its ease of use.
