Abstract:Based on semiparametric density estimation techniques, this stydy analyzes the effect of rising dispersion (hereafter as: disp.) of men's earnings (here as: m-erns.) and related changes in family (as: f.) behaviour on increasing inequality (as: in-eqy.) in the distribution of f. income in the U.S. For the period from 1969 to 1989, the growing disp. of m-erns. and changing f. structure can account for most of the rise in f. income in-eqy. By contrast, the increase in labour force participation by women offset this trend. In-eqy. grew at a slower rate in the 1990s than in earlier decades, largely due to stabilization in the relative earnings of men from low-income families.
