Abstract:This study explores the determinants of corporate reputation (hereafter as: corp-rep.) of a sample of large U.K. firms. The corp-rep. determinants are derived from the assessments of managers and market analysts. Along with the influences of a variety of firm attributes, there is found a reputational effect associated with a female presence (as: fem-prsc.) at board level. This effect varies across sectors, showing the influence of a firm's stakeholder environment in determining whether a fem-prsc. on the board harms or enhances the corp-rep. The emerging pattern indicates that the fem-prsc. on the board is favourably viewed in only those sectors operating close to final consumers. The nature of this effect is argued to reflect an imperative for quality of representation, emphasizing the need to reflect gender diversity among customers.
