Abstract:This article examines the relationship between managerial incentives and earnings management. According to the authors, the use of accruals to manipulate reported earnings is more likely at companies where the CEO’s potential total compensation is more closely tied to the value of stock and option holdings. The authors also find that CEOs exercise unusually large numbers of options and sell large quantities of shares during years of high accruals.
