Abstract:A brief introduction to Total Quality Management (TQM) is presented. It is a holistic concept and must be implemented as such. However, there are four barriers to full implementation. These are short-termism, organizational segmentalism, reluctant managers, and poor industrial relations. The four barriers individually impact most on particular elements of the TQM model which are labelled as teams, methods, internal markets and leadership. At the present time, TQM is for most companies an aspiration or an ideal. In order to overcome barriers, TQM should be placed in the theories of organizational behaviour. Furthermore, TQM requires different approaches for companies operating in different markets.
