Abstract: | The lessons from a number of earlier studies of performance appraisal interviews are summarized. The dynamics of the performance review process is explored. It is argued that many organizations have failed to learn from the experiences of other organizations and indeed from their own activities. An initiative to refocus the appraisal, review and career planning within the Shoe and Allied Trades Research Association (SATRA) is described. It is shown how the organizations's environment has changed steadily throughout the 1970s and 1980s. The previous performance appraisal scheme is critically examined. The objectives and the most important characteristics of the new review program are highlighted. |
