Abstract:The worker participation movement has gained momentum nearly 20 years ago. In Europe, Volvo, Saab and other companies have been using self-managed work teams for years. The use of this type of team work in the USA was conceived during the 1960s and implemented in 1971 at the General Foods dog food plant in Topeka, Kansas. The widespread use of such programs poses special problems for human resource management. A new paradigm for HRM and the HRM professional role is outlined. The following topics are considered: recruitment and selection; job descriptions and position audits; training and development; wage and salary administration; performance appraisal; employee benefits; succession planning; industrial relations.
