Abstract:The company started in Leeds in 1984 when Michael Marks, a Russian immigrant, set up a "Penny Bazaar" from which no item cost more than one penny. Ten years later Tom Spenser joined Michael Marks in partnership. The article describes the philosophy on which Marks&Spenser has been built, early stages of its internationalization and analyses its market in the USA and Canada, in Europe and in the Far East. In the 98 years since Marks&Spenser formed their business partnership the business has grown to one of Britain's leading retailers.
