Abstract:The nature, costs and benefits of Advanced Manufacturing Technology (AMT) are assessed. Some problems related to the quantification of strategic benefits, the costing accounting system shortfalls, and the capital budgeting process are examined. The techniques discussed vary in sophistication from the simple operational imperative to sophisticated models demanding the support of a management scientist. A useful summary of analytic techniques is provided. The appropriateness of a technique depends on the level of organizational communication, specialist skills of support staff, existing information systems and the technology under consideration. A number of strategic and methodological issues are considered.
