Abstract:The development of a new "high-tech", "high-involvement" organization is sketched. The focus is on the organizational design features of the new culture. These design features are compared and contrasted with those of a theoretical model of a high involvement organization. Comment is included on progress towards the new culture and some of the difficulties encountered. The case of Pirelli Aberdare, UK is described and analyzed. A new approach to automated manufacture of building wires is presented comprising: 1. new computer integrated manufacturing and control technology; 2. the development and application of an involvement strategy.
