Abstract:The impact of stakeholders on shareholders is a much debated issue. This article examines the impact of one stakeholder group, the employees. The authors find that labour-friendly companies outperform otherwise similar companies and that announcements of labour-friendly policies influence stock returns in a positive way. The results show that concern for employee well-being translates into higher productivity and profitability that out-weigh the costs of such practices.
