Abstract:The paper examines the effects of diversification upon small company performance and survival in the United Kingdom in 1987-1989. The consequences for small firms of being and becoming involved in more than one type of business have been investigated. For very small companies diversification minimizes the likelihood of growth. The optimum level at which to start the process of diversification is it around thirty employees. The takeover of another estabished small concern or expansion into a new product area is only useful for those small firms which have first built a strong foundation in their primary line of business.
