Abstract:The author examines how a firm’s knowledge base interacts with its product market activity by considering the existing literature. The previous findings that value is created by related diversification have been criticized regarding methodology and measure issues. The author addresses these issues by developing a measure of technological diversity founded on citation-weighted patents. The measure represents a firm’s chance for corporate diversification based on valuable knowledge assets’ economies of scale, applies for both single- and multibusiness firms, and is not correlated with more elemental diversification aspects. Data gathered within a large sample of firms illustrates the positive relationship between diversification based on technological diversity and performance’s market based measures. Further, controlling R&D intensity and capital intensity are also indicators of the assets underlying diversification.
