Abstract:In all capital markets including London there is a definite trend towards universal banking, driven primarily by the commercial banks. If they will be more profitable than specialist banks, and ultimately dominate, is still an open issue. Advantages: (i) They can cross-sell a wider range of products. (ii) They have greater scope for cross- subsidization. (iii) They can offer a full range of the services. (iv) They have greater opportunities to smoothing out of income fluctuations. Disadvantages: (i) Conflict of interests between different fields. (ii) Service is not specialized. (iii) No concentration.
