| Abstract: | Recently, knowledge of the problems facing electric utilities has become widespread, and the concept of diversification into other businesses outside the traditional generation, transmission and distribution of electricity has been championed as a potential solution to some of the problems faced by utilities. Several studies have reported on the financial performance of utility firms that have attempted diversification, and their findings are mixed. The conditions necessary to achieve diversification are presented. Sample groups of diversified and non-diversified electric utility firms are examined with regard to their performance relative to the efficient frontier. |
