Abstract:The large, diversified companies are trying to foster greater entrepreneurship. What they all too often are getting is the form, not the substance, of entrepreneurship. On the basis of an in-depth research on eight multi-billion-dollar companies in the USA and Europe it is explained why conventional approaches fail. Specific ways are recommended for senior management to entrepreneurship at the business-unit or division level. The problems of hiring and promotion of managers are dealt with. The importance of intrinsic motivation is emphasized. Good control - visibility of results and failures - is essential to the success. Some ways of reducing risk and preventing irresponsible behavior are described.
