Abstract:The portfolio strategy and the horizontal strategy are concurrent concepts of controlling diversified corporations. The two concepts represent two extreme points on the continuum between formal goals oriented control and specified goals oriented control. The main goal of the formal goals oriented portfolio strategy is growth, and it does not influence the autonomy of the corporation's strategic units. The main feature of horizontal strategy is that it tries to benefit from the possible synergism of a corporation, and this form of management curtails the autonomy of corporate units. It is shown how a strategic control system for the two types of strategy can be formed.
