Abstract: | Japanese companies are implementing an ambitious program of industrial diversification, particularly in those sectors that have reached a certain level of technology maturity. The impact of this diversification on human resource management strategy in the synthetic textile industry is examined. Particularly, the results of considerable transfer of labour are investigated. It is shown that the new skills required by new products and technologies are secured through internal training programs. The effects of life-long employment and that of homogeneity of wages are considered. Incentive-based management strategies are described. Trade union efforts to safeguard against heterogeneity in response to these are reported. |
