Abstract: | The initial doubts of Manila bankers and businessmen have been replaced by a growing respect for the man they call "steady Eddie" and they believe that he will win enough support to remain a strong president. They point to approval ratings for Ramos that are still well above 50%. They take still further comfort from the 5.1% annual growth figure for the first half of the year. This, bankers say, is evidence that there will be a strong enough economic recovery in the next six months to win the endorsement of voters. A booming stock market will also help, not least by bringing a big profit to the thousands of small and first time shareholders who invested in the privatization of the petrochemicals company, Petron. |
