Abstract:This article studies sexist discourse as a form of hate speech by reviewing various definitions of hate speech and analysing the works of the neo-conservative profiled author William D. Gairdner. The paper argues that despite Gairdner's sexist discourse not meeting the legal criteria of hate speech, the discourse is in fact consistent with the linguistic criteria of hate speech and should therefore be considered as such. The article acknowledges the importance of studies on hate speech that deal with racist, ethnicist and homophobic discourses, but also calls for scholarly attention on sexist discourse as hate speech.
