Abstract:The issue of slavery has attracted wide public and media attention in response to the bicentenary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act of 1807. Using critical discourse analysis, this article examines the rhetorical resources drawn on in policy, media and public discourses to understand and soothe the traumatic history of the exploitation of the African people. It is argued that the result is a way of talking about the transatlantic slave trade which has been labelled the 'abolition discourse'. Data emerge from formal institutional talk, media reporting and everyday talk.
