Abstract:This study develops a model of relatedness and invention (henceforth as: invtn.) performance (as: perf.) of high-technology mergers and acquisitions (M&As), considering science and technology similarity and complementarity (as: cmlty.) as important drivers of invtn. The model is tested using a sample of M&As from the drug, chemical, and electronics industries and a fine-grained measure of knowledge relatedness (as: rltss.) distinguishing btw. science and technology rltss. Among others, it is found that complementary (as: cmty.) scientific knowledge and cmty. technological knowledge both contribute to post-merger invtn. perf. by stimulating higher quality and more new inventions.
