Abstract:This article examines the implications for the Brazilian labour force of the introduction of flexible automation and new organizational techniques. Drawing on an empirical study of 132 of Brazil's leading firms in eight industrial sectors, the authors focus on overall employment levels, changing skill profiles and the capacity of the training infrastructure to meet new requirements. Commentators are deeply divided on the subject of the skill and training requirements of the various new technologies and techniques.
