Abstract:Downsizing is one of the most disruptive and dramatic types of organizational change which most leaders are likely to experience. A poorly executed downsizing operation can traumatize a company for years and lead to unexpected results. The costs of accompanying mistakes or oversights may be horrendous. Despite the risks, a tremendous number of organizations have embarked on systematic downsizing. This article reports on downsizing strategies in a group of large Canadian comanies, including several large multinationals, and presents some suggestions for improving practice.
