Abstract:This paper briefly describes Darwinian models of the evolution of norms and other aspects of culture. Such modes assume that culture is a system of inheritance, in which beliefs and values that affect behavior are transmitted from individual to individual by social learning. Cultural change occurs because various processes cause some cultural variants to spread and others to diminish. Some processes cause the spread of beliefs that lead to behavior not predicted by models based on self-interested rationality.
