Abstract:The Berlin wall has come down. President Yeltsin now attends meetings of the G7 and Mc Donalds is thriving in Moscow, but the road to Samarkand still looks much the same as it did when it was part of the Soviet Empire. Today an Uzbek strong man, Islam Karimov, rules the 22 million people of Uzbekistan but some say little else has changed since independence in 1991. The problem is that Karimov is finding it difficult to make the transition from centralised planning to a market economy.
