| Abstract: | Viewing the text as a message-centered utterance results in a denial of its referential function. Through a semiotic reading of Whitman's 'Song of Myself' and Rimbaud's 'Illuminations' the author shows that reference requiring the reader to supply nonverbal information - such as that related to the images of the body - is fundamental to the meanings generated by these works. |
