Abstract:The 1980's brought a new manufacturing paradigm involving ideas of just-in-time , small lot sizes, continuous improvement and total quality. Plant managers talk about being able to run smaller lot sizes. Top management sees the value of setup reduction and sets aggressive goals. The reality sets in. How does one undertake a setup reduction effort without being swamped with work? How does one know if any of the setup reductions will have a significant impact, and if we want to target those setups, how does one know where to start?
