Abstract:Some Just-in-Time advocates proclaim that 'inventory is the root of all evil'. In transfer lines, however, buffer inventory between stations is not the root, but the flower, of evil. Transfer line buffers are a result of production problems, not the cause. Removing these buffers without fixing the cause of the problems is counterproductive. Transfer line buffers should be reduced incrementally after process improvements.
