Abstract:The Toyota production system smooths production by dividing the monthly forecast into daily production quotas. The plant produces the quota exactly, no more and no less. These inflexible quotas smooth production, but they can also add cost. This paper investigates the tradeoff of building ahead of quotas to reduce overtime versus increased inventory. A Markov decision process quantifies the benetifs of quota flexibility for a automobile manufacturer to convince management that the strict daily quota system was expensive and unnecessary.
