| Abstract: | The warm embrace between former bitter enemies, Angolan President Dos Santos and the rebel leaders Mr Jonas Savimbi, was greeted with cautious optimism by the long-suffering people of Angola. A formal accord was signed on May 6 to finalise peace arrangements and hammer out a new role for Savimbi and his movement, Unita within Government. The international community watched with bated breath as Mr Savimbi, who has reneged on several peace pacts in the past, declared that he no longer feared for his safety and was willing to work with the Govenment in Luanda. Perhaps this time, everybody fervently prays, the peace deal will stick. |
