Abstract:Development pole is the key to the difference of mechanism of economic growth between the two delta areas. Since 1980, Hong Kong has become the development pole of the Pearl River, while Shanghai's leading role for the economic growth in the Yangtze river Delta has been weakened mainly due to the limitation of the centralized system before 1990. However, the exploitation of Pudong area marked the beginning of rebuilding the development pole of the Yangtze River Delta. In the coming future, an upsurge of economic development in the Yangtze River Delta is bound to follow the growth of Shanghai as a pole, while the main motive power of economic growth in the Pearl River Delta is being mainly transformed from an extrinsic resource into an intrinsic one.
