Abstract:A manufacturing firm is considered to have N parts to be processed by M machines. The proposed methodology consists of two parts. The first phase determines an optimal number of cells that minimizes the total associated cost (material handling, bottleneck operation related, and cell setup costs). The second phase devises a clustering methodology that groups the machines and parts into an optimal number of cells, such that the total processing time of the jobs in any cell does not exceed a particular time limit.
