Abstract:Earlier shown data imply a positive connection between successful small manufacturing firms (SMF) innovation and recourse to external sources of scientific and technical expertise. The results suggest that useful external help can often be acquired at relatively low cost. Some of the most important and frequently required external inputs come from informal and/or non-market channels. In terms of private services, the most useful inputs come from specialists that deliver solutions to problems that pertain to industrial design, testing, production-engineering and R&D. From these sources, inputs are relatively expensive.
