Abstract: | This paper offers a unified quantitative framework to juxtapose the gains from integration with the budgetary costs and gives a bottom line result on net benefits of enlargement for Germany. The authors decomposition of the overall policy scenario allows to draw some broad conclusions for other EU countries as well. The paper offers an informal view on the policy scenario. Based on simulation results from a calibrated dynamic general equilibrium model of the German economy, the following section gives tentative answers to the above questions. The Appendix offers a stylized model of trade and production and highlights some key supply side effects. The paper provides a substantial list of references on this subject. |
