Abstract:The paper considers the following subjects: Angola - the blessing and curse of oil, Egypt - Mubarak walks a tightrope, South Africa - African slave labour in Australia where the paper states that police are intensifying investigations into a "slave ring" exporting cheap labour, lured by promises of big money, from Africa to Australia. The paper states that oil and diamond revenues will fill government coffers but will not necessarily provide the mass of the people with income. Unless Angola's economy can begin an upturn, states the paper, the current peace may not last. The paper also states that the war against Iraq would cap what has been a troubled 2002 for president Mubarak's regime with the economy growing sluggishly and the political arena showing greater volatility.
