Abstract:The authors consider how organizations select, adapt and retain best HRM practices. A framework for the selection, adaptation and retention process of HR practices is constructed, and the authors compare economic rationality to normative rationality in the light of this process. A life cycle of a best HRM practice is formulated and the differences in the ways by which companies select and adapt best practices are discussed. Also the consequences of best practices are considered; do the companies gain competitive advantage by implementing best practices? At the end of the article the authors provide a set of hypotheses to guide the future research in the field of HRM and best practices.
