Abstract:The paper models social mobility over three generations in Finland from 1950 to 2000. Lineages were constructed and a three-dimensional mobility table containing eight layers was built by using the Erikson-Goldthorpe class schema. The social inheritance process was found to be very similar across all eight lineages. Moreover, after controlling for parents social class, the grandchildren's social class is almost conditionally independent from the grandparents’' social class. The lagged inheritance means a higher possibility that the grandchildren of service class or self-employed farmers remain in the same class. The lagged barrier of mobility means lower chance of getting more advantageous positions than the last generations.
