Abstract:This paper analyzes boards of directors (henceforth as: brd./brds.) as workgroups, i.e. groups of people performing tasks within an organizational context. A model is developed relating group's social-psychological processes to three different brd. tasks: monitoring, networking and service. Based on a survey on over 300 large manufacturing firms in Italy, findings support the idea that a. process and demographic variables (partly to a limited extent) influence significantly brd. task performance (here as: b-t-p.), b. brd. processes have a different impact on each specific brd. task, c. depending on firm and industry characteristics, b-t-p. is variable.
