Abstract:It is examined how firms choose among alternative modes of development in the context of horizontal growth. Mergers and acquisitions (M&As) as well as alliances formation are suggested to influenced by both internal and external factors. More precisely, the role of imitation and experience is examined as distinct learning mechanisms, both separately and simultaneously. Using isomorphism theoretical background, it is shown that the choice of expansion mode is highly influenced by competitor moves. Most of the hypotheses are empirically confirmed using a sample of over 80 firms from the retail industry from 1984 to 2003. It is also shown that imitation mechanism differ whether M&As or alliances are considered.
