Abstract: | In spite of significant competitive advantages of the automated, robotized manufacturing technologies, American managers have been hesitant to adopt them. A number of successful applications of such technologies are reviewed. The various forms of these are considered: Engineering /computer-aided/ Techniques; Manufacturing Techniques /robotized, flexible systems/; Business Techniques /manufacturing resource planning, just-in-time production/. Benefits of the new technologies. Internal /efficiency, productivity etc./ and external measures /market image, faster market response, quality, timing etc./. High capital costs, maintenance, software, education and training expenditures are common. Implications for strategy. The role of finance. |
