Abstract:Achieving international competitive edge will cause a painful adjustment in Canada, but global competition makes economic insularity a hazardous option. Canadian firms need to specialize in product/service areas, where they can develop and sustain a competitive edge.Boardroom attitudes to internalization should be bolder, and many firms would benefit from more international boards of directors. The pursuit of international competitiveness means moving from independence to interdependence with the U.S. and the rest of the world. It demands a great deal of maturity and self-confidence. The country needs a consensus to go forward. The futility of the old status quo may develop that consensus.
