Abstract:An investigation of strategic planning in 82 Belgian firms is described. A questionnaire solicited information about firms with formal strategic planning system and those without it. The measures used for setting the firms' objectives are outlined. Time horizons were compared. The annual revision of the strategic plan was found to be a common business practice. Established formal procedures are examined. The techniques most frequently used are listed. Problems of reward systems are highlighted. Organizational factors are discussed, managerial roles are analysed. Advantages and disadvantages of strategic planning are compared. Recommendations are summarized for future development.
